Huddersfield Town Foundation’s Premier League (PL) Kicks Programme supports Black History Month!

October celebrates Black History Month, the annual tribute of the history, achievements and contributions of black people in the United Kingdom.

For the whole month, events celebrating African and Caribbean cultures and histories will take place up and down the country.

Black History Month was created by historian Carter G. Woodson who wanted to challenge preconceptions on ‘black communities having no history’.

Black History Month is a method of reflecting on the diverse histories of those from African and Caribbean origin, celebrating achievements and contributions to the Social, Political, Economic and Cultural development of the United Kingdom.

The Huddersfield Town Foundation ensured the PL Kicks participants could explore Black History Month and gain an understanding of diverse communities and culture by delivering several activities specifically for this event.

The Huddersfield Town Foundation’s PL Kicks programme uses the power of football and the value of sports participation to aid the development of youngsters.

Although physical activity is the main tool utilised to improve physical health and well-being. Educational and personal development sessions are delivered too, not only to impact individuals but also to unite communities.

The Huddersfield Town Foundation PL Kicks participants attended Sheffield United Community Foundation’s under 16 football tournaments. The event partnered with Football Unites and Racism Divides to remember the stories of England’s first professional black ethnic footballers – Walter Tull and Arthur Wharton.

Town’s side won the tournament and Jenson, one of the Kicks participants, won the Sheffield United signed shirt for being overall best player.

A Black History Month workshop has also been delivered during the Premier League Kicks vs Youth Zone weekly sessions. The sessions identified black ethnic role models and the impacts they have had on communities today!
