11 Dec TOWN FOUNDATION PROMOTES HEALTHY EATING
The Town Foundation’s NCS Team complete ‘Healthy Huddz’ social action project!
On Saturday 23 November, before the Terriers home fixture against Birmingham City, the Town Foundation’s NCS Autumn programme participants completed their social action project known as ‘Healthy Huddz’.
Healthy Huddz was a dual-purpose campaign designed to raise funds for Stirley Community Farm and promote healthy eating via a sponsored walk. During the walk, participants picked litter on route to help clean up the local area.
The sponsored walk began at Huddersfield Train Station and travelled up to Greenhead Park before finishing at The John Smith’s Stadium in time for participants to celebrate by watching the game.
Through their fundraising, the group raised £217.68 for Stirley Community Farm and collected an impressive 13 bags of litter.
Stirley Community Farm is owned by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, which aims to bring back wildlife to farming and work with people local to Huddersfield to achieve healthy living and a healthier environment.
The farm covers 240 acres of land including a thriving food training garden, bee hives and space to run agricultural and conservation training for young people.
Areas of the farm are grazed with traditional beef shorthorn cattle and a hay cut is taken later in the season to help encourage more wildlife into the fields.
Money raised through the NCS Social Action Project will contribute to the maintenance of the farm, for the benefit of the local community.
Seven participants took part in the challenge, accompanied by the Town Foundation’s NCS Manager, Maureen Quinn and NCS Coordinator, Evan Hall. Among the participants were members of the Town Foundation’s EmployAbility and PL Kicks programmes.
NCS Coordinator, Evan Hall commented:
“The efforts of the group were brilliant, to do something so positive for the local area despite poor weather conditions.
“To collect the amount of litter they did and raise over £200 for a local cause is a credit to the participants.
“We are really proud of the impact on our community and the reflection on the NCS programme.â€
NCS is a youth programme running across England and Northern Ireland, existing to engage, unite and empower young people aged 15-17. Applications are now being accepted for the Town Foundation’s summer cohort.
