13 Oct JORDAN RHODES VISITS ORCHARD PRIMARY BREAKFAST CLUB
Ahead of World Food Day on 16 October, children attending Orchard Primary Academy’s Breakfast Club received a surprise visit from Huddersfield Town striker Jordan Rhodes!
The school in Chickenley, Dewsbury, is one of 41 Kirklees schools to have a Breakfast Club facilitated by the football club’s registered charity, the Town Foundation.
These clubs are free of charge to parents and have served well over two million meals since launching in 2012.
They also provide a key social element, allowing children to spend time mixing and having fun before the school day starts.
During his visit Jordan played games and chatted to children from a variety of year groups, and signed autographs.
He also spoke to staff and BBC Radio Leeds about the benefits the programme has had on the students.
Earlier this year academics from the University of Sheffield, using food poverty figures collected by the Food Foundation, found that 12.02% of adults in Kirklees were worried about having enough food. This is a challenge that the Town Foundation works to combat.
In addition to the successful Breakfast Club project, the charity continues to work closely with the Salvation Army in Mirfield and has also accessed funding from the One Community Foundation to provide food parcels during the COVID-19 pandemic.
These have been distributed to 270 families identified as being most in need by the Foundation’s partner schools thus far, with families of Orchard Primary Academy among the beneficiaries.
Every home Saturday matchday, supporters will also see collection points for the Huddersfield Welcome Centre and Batley Food Bank around the John Smith’s Stadium.
Should you wish to support the Breakfast Club programme directly, you can purchase a £5 voucher from the HTAFC Megastore online HERE, or in-person at the stadium store.
