The Town Foundation showed its support of World Book day on Thursday as Town’s Club Ambassador Andy Booth and Town Foundation Patron Helena Pielichaty visited two schools in Huddersfield. 

To celebrate World Book Day Andy and Helena visited Ashbrow Junior School and Dalton Junior and Infants School to promote the importance of literacy.

Town Foundation Patron Helena is a renowned children’s author, especially writing stories about girls in sports. 

At both of the schools Helena led an hour-long entertaining assembly and got the children involved in acting out extracts from her books and telling imaginative stories. 

The children from both schools also wrote their own poems for World Book Day. All the poems were read by Helena and she selected Joseph from Ashbrow and Abbi Leigh from Dalton as winners, both received a prize of a book voucher from the Town Foundation.

The Town Foundation has supported World Book Day since it was founded in July 2012 and this is just a small example of the work it does to benefit youngsters across the community.

World Book Day has now been running on 5 March for the past 18 years and is celebrated in over 100 countries as a world celebration of books.

It was first created to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own.

They also give out free Book Tokens to all the registered schools to help get children involved with reading.

Club Ambassador, Andy Booth said: “It’s a great day to celebrate literacy and get the children more interesting in reading books.

“Someone like Helena is a great role model for the kids and allows them to become more creative and get more involved in the day.”
